1. You and us

These Terms apply to the Afterline application and related services provided by [TO COMPLETE: operator’s legal name] (“we,” “us”). Contact email: [TO COMPLETE: support and privacy email]. Contact address: [TO COMPLETE: valid contact address].

Please read these Terms before use, particularly the provisions on third-party services, AI content, fees, interruptions, and liability. You accept these Terms through an explicit confirmation in the application. Notices and permissions for personal information processing are governed by the Afterline Privacy Policy and the relevant feature notices; accepting these Terms does not mean consenting to every optional processing activity.

If you lack the legal capacity to enter into these Terms independently, your guardian should review them and decide whether to permit your use. The service is not directed to children under fourteen, or a higher age where required by applicable local law.

2. What Afterline provides

Afterline helps you synchronize and revisit reading highlights and thoughts, with features including local search, note connections, reading background explanations, and AI insights. Availability depends on your application version and enabled entitlements.

Afterline is an independent reading companion. Unless expressly stated otherwise, we are not officially affiliated with, an agent of, or endorsed by WeRead, Tencent, Apple, or any model provider.

Afterline does not provide a way to bypass paid access, access controls, or copyright protections. Being able to synchronize content does not grant you rights to reproduce, publish, or commercially exploit it.

3. Third-party connections and credentials

The current version connects through a WeRead API Key that you supply and does not require a separate Afterline account. Use only accounts and credentials you are authorized to use, and follow the source platform’s applicable terms.

An API Key is a credential for accessing the associated reading data. Protect it and do not disclose it to people who are not authorized to access your data. If you suspect exposure, revoke or replace it through the source platform’s available controls and remove the old credential from Afterline.

Synchronization depends on third-party interfaces, network access, and valid authorization. Interface changes, rate limits, maintenance, or expired authorization can cause delays, interruptions, or incomplete results. We will reasonably address problems caused by Afterline, but cannot guarantee continuous third-party availability. Synchronization status in Afterline does not replace the source platform’s original records.

4. Your content and intellectual property

You retain the rights you lawfully hold in your original thoughts and other content. Book excerpts, covers, and other third-party materials belong to their respective rights holders. Using Afterline does not change that ownership.

To perform the functions you choose, you permit us to process the relevant content as necessary, including synchronization, local storage and display, and processing through disclosed providers when you authorize online AI features. This permission is limited to the purposes and duration needed to provide those services. It does not transfer ownership or grant a blanket license to publish your notes, use them in advertising, or train models on them.

The application, interface, and our original materials are protected by applicable intellectual property laws. Third-party and open-source components remain subject to their respective licenses; these Terms do not restrict rights granted by those licenses or by law.

5. AI features and output

Online AI features process relevant highlights and thoughts. The Privacy Policy and feature notices describe what is sent, to whom, and how it is processed. Local keyword search and local relevance calculations do not themselves require sending note content to AI providers.

AI explanations, relationship assessments, and insights may contain factual errors, omissions, bias, or inaccurate references. They do not necessarily represent an author’s views, authoritative conclusions, or professional advice. Check important material against the original book and reliable sources. Do not rely solely on output for medical, legal, financial, or other consequential decisions.

AI output may not be original and may resemble output provided to others. We do not promise exclusive rights in output. Before publishing or commercially using it, check any relevant third-party rights.

6. Free features, annual Pro, and additional credits

6.1 Purchases and renewal

Afterline offers free features, an automatically renewing annual Pro subscription, and one-time purchases of shared usage credits. There is currently no monthly subscription. Prices, currency, and applicable taxes are shown in the App Store purchase confirmation. Purchases require your explicit confirmation. Testing entitlements or simulated Pro status do not establish payment or an actual subscription.

Unless you cancel automatic renewal under Apple's rules, the annual subscription renews automatically and Apple charges for renewal. You can review renewal dates and manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple account's subscription settings. Deleting the application does not cancel a subscription. Cancelling automatic renewal normally preserves Pro access for the paid, still-valid period, except where a refund, transaction revocation, or another verified store decision changes the entitlement.

6.2 Annual included requests and counting

Each valid Pro subscription year includes 500 shared online AI requests, with no separate monthly allowance. Reading background explanations, AI insights, and note relationship assessment (Jev) share those 500 requests; each feature does not receive its own allocation of 500.

Each successful new background explanation or AI insight counts as one request. Jev processes up to 16 candidate notes per batch, and a successfully processed batch counts as one request even when every candidate is assessed as unrelated. Built-in features such as automatic relationship assessment use the same counting rules when they produce new online requests. Reading locally saved results does not consume a request; actively generating a result again creates a new request.

The subscription year follows the verified store subscription period, rather than the calendar year or month. A successfully renewed subscription receives 500 requests when its new period begins; unused included requests do not carry over. A new calendar month, cancellation of automatic renewal, purchase restoration, reinstallation, or duplicate notification does not reset the current period's usage. Any store-granted billing grace period retains the original period's usage record.

Processing reserves one request, which is charged on success and returned to its original source on a confirmed failure. Timeouts, disconnections, or other uncertain outcomes retain the reservation pending verification. Please report unresolved cases through the contact channel in these Terms. Resending the same request identifier does not charge it again; actively starting another generation creates a new request.

6.3 Shared credit packs

The current shared credit pack provides 200 requests per pack for the same three features. A pack is a one-time consumable purchase, does not renew automatically, and does not itself grant Pro access. Buying a pack requires a valid annual Pro subscription and exhaustion of the current period's included requests. Included requests are used before purchased credits.

Purchased credits do not expire and are not cleared at the end of a subscription year or when automatic renewal is cancelled. Using credits still requires a valid annual Pro subscription. The balance remains after Pro expires and becomes usable again when annual Pro access is valid. Credits are not money and cannot be transferred or exchanged for cash; this does not restrict any statutory refund rights.

6.4 Purchase identity and restoration

No separate Afterline registration is required. Subscriptions and credits are associated with a verified Apple purchase identity. Restoring purchases under the same Apple purchase account does not replenish spent annual requests or grant the same credit purchase twice. Use the corresponding original Apple purchase account when changing devices, reinstalling, or subscribing again. Family Sharing members do not share a credit wallet.

A paid credit purchase that has not yet been recorded can be credited after its transaction is verified, without buying again. Subsequent expiry of Pro does not cancel the recording of that paid purchase. Verification depends on Apple, RevenueCat, and network availability and may be delayed. If access or credit recording is incorrect after a purchase, restore purchases or contact us.

6.5 Refunds and purchase status changes

Refund requests for Apple purchases follow Apple's applicable process, without limiting your rights under applicable law. A verified credit-pack refund removes the requests associated with that purchase. If those requests have already been used, the resulting shortfall is recorded and later purchases first cover that shortfall. New requests may be unavailable while the shortfall or available balance prevents them. A verified reversal of a refund reinstates the corresponding purchase record without clearing usage already incurred. Duplicate notifications do not add or remove credits repeatedly.

Exhausting the annual included requests does not expire Pro. During valid Pro access, you may still use paid benefits that do not require a new online request, including reading previously saved paid results. When neither included requests nor credits are available, new online AI requests pause. You may buy an eligible credit pack or continue once a valid renewal enters its next period.

7. Fair use policy

We aim to provide a stable service for ordinary reading, learning, and work, and to prevent exceptional request patterns from disrupting other users. This policy applies alongside the explicit purchase conditions in Section 6. The current service has an annual included allocation and additional credit purchases; it does not promise unlimited online AI requests. Reaching the disclosed annual allocation alone is not malicious abuse and is not grounds for permanently terminating your subscription.

7.1 Permitted and prohibited use

You may use the application's normal features, including its built-in synchronization, background processing, and automatic relationship assessment. Do not use unauthorized external scripts, bots, or direct interface calls for bulk access; share or forge purchase credentials; bypass authorization or frequency controls; resell interface access; or otherwise maliciously interfere with the service. Do not infringe copyright, privacy, or other lawful rights. This provision does not prohibit research, interoperability, or other activities expressly permitted by law or open-source licenses.

7.2 Assessment and protective controls

We may assess risk through automated detection and necessary manual review of request frequency, concurrency, repeated or failed requests, credential validity, and verifiable abnormal patterns. We will not arbitrarily withdraw purchased benefits solely by reference to an undisclosed “average user” standard.

Short-term frequency controls currently apply separately to source network addresses and purchase identities, configured at 30 requests per 60 seconds. This is not an additional monthly allocation; users sharing a network may affect one another. To prevent persistent failed retries from burdening the service, there is also a generation-attempt allowance: 1,500 attempts for the annual included allocation and 600 additional attempts per 200-credit pack. An accepted generation attempt remains counted toward this protection even if it clearly fails. Available requests and attempts are recorded separately. Reaching this protection may pause new generation while requests remain available; contact us for review. Ordinary service failures do not themselves constitute user misconduct.

7.3 Measures and review

When short-term controls are triggered, we may delay affected requests and ask you to retry later. When attempts reach their protective threshold, an outcome awaits verification, or abuse is suspected, we may pause affected new online requests while reviewing the matter or discussing a resolution with you. Verified serious or persistent unlawful activity, infringement, fraud, or threats to service security may justify further restrictions or termination proportionate to the risk.

Where circumstances allow, we will explain a restriction through an in-app notice before applying it. Where an immediate security or service-continuity risk requires immediate action, we will explain it when practicable. You may dispute a decision or request review through the contact channel in these Terms. Measures should remain limited to what is necessary and do not remove applicable refund, data-handling, or other obligations. We will not restrict service merely because you complain or exercise lawful personal information rights.

7.4 Policy changes

Changes to this policy and purchase conditions follow Section 10. We will publish changes and their effective date, clearly notify material changes to paid benefits through the application or a public service page, and address existing entitlements as required by law. This section does not authorize retroactive reduction of an already promised current-period allocation, removal of lawfully purchased unused credits, or avoidance of applicable legal requirements.

8. Data storage and ending use

The Privacy Policy explains local storage, online processing, and deletion. Removing an API Key does not delete data already synchronized to your device or original data held by third-party platforms. Afterline should not be your only backup of original reading records; retain usable copies of important content.

You may stop using and delete the application. Afterwards, we will process relevant information only as necessary to conclude the service, meet legal obligations, or address disputes, subject to the retention rules in the Privacy Policy.

9. Service changes and liability

We will reasonably maintain the service but do not guarantee uninterrupted, error-free operation or suitability for every purpose. Network faults, system updates, and third-party interface changes may affect use. We will take reasonable steps to remedy issues within our control.

For changes materially affecting core functions or a planned service closure, we will give advance notice where practicable and reasonably address data handling and any paid entitlements.

Each party is responsible under applicable law and according to its fault. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, including liability involving intentional misconduct, gross negligence, personal injury, or mandatory consumer and personal information protections. A third-party failure does not automatically remove our legal responsibilities.

10. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms to reflect changes in features, operations, or legal requirements and will publish the changes and effective date. Material changes to your rights or obligations will be notified in the application or through another reasonable channel. Where renewed consent is required, the change will apply after that consent is obtained. New terms will not retroactively remove accrued lawful rights.

If you disagree with a change, you may stop using the affected service and contact us about existing entitlements.

11. Applicable law and disputes

These Terms are governed by [TO CONFIRM: applicable law based on the operator and distribution territories], without limiting mandatory protections available under the law of your habitual residence or another applicable jurisdiction. The parties may first seek an agreed resolution. If unresolved, either party may bring the matter before a court with lawful jurisdiction. These Terms do not require you to waive lawful complaints, litigation, or other remedies.

Chinese is the primary text and English is provided for convenience. In case of inconsistency, Chinese prevails to the extent permitted by applicable law; any legally required language rule takes precedence. Invalidity of one provision does not affect the remaining provisions.

For applications obtained through the Apple App Store, the applicable Apple Standard End User License Agreement also governs the application license. These Terms supplement it as Afterline service terms and are not intended as a Custom EULA submitted to Apple. Mandatory law takes precedence, and the software license scope is determined by applicable Apple licensing rules.
